January 29

Temperature range: -1 to 0.6, fog, low ceiling, heavy wet snow.

A group was supposed to camp on shore tonight but the snow is too wet so that will have to wait for another opportunity. Not for this kids. Been there, done that. They don't even get tents...

I was extremely disappointed today to see the reults of my 200+ penguin photos from this morning's excursion to Petermann Island. Somehow one of the settings on the camera was changed and I couldn't figure out what it was or how to fix it. Some of the shots would have been excellent but now they are nothing more than souvenirs kept as memories rather than being thrown away. I skipped the afternoon excursion because it didn't interest me and also because I was determined to find the problem with the camera. it took a while but I finally tracked it down and repaired it. Keep your fingers crossed!

The food continues in great quantities (well the actual quantity on the plate isn't so much, it is the fact that it seems as if every time we turn around we are eating again). So far I have managed to avoid eating at "Afternoon Tea" and for the last two days I've resisted the ever present licorice allsorts and fruit bowls. I am going to try and stick to my resolve to have only a bit of salad, soup and perhaps dessert at dinner (i.e. skipping the entre). Lunch today was a very good minestrone soup followed by penne with carbonara sauce. Dessert was a fruit sabayon that tasted fine but was too runny. At both lunch and dinner there is a good assortment of salad components from which to chooose.

Tomorrow there are two excusions again but I don't know the locations yet.
